Together rhythm, harmony and melody enhance emotional expression and deeper connection
I thought I’d feature these three healing elements of music in my video of Colours of Autumn.
I often here many new drum students say at the start of a Positive Music drum circle, that they aren’t very musical. I like to put them at ease straight away, saying there are no wrong notes. So many of us are drawn to drumming, a deep desire to connect with music, to be part of sound, rhythm and energy that allows our spirit to be free.
There’s a lot of research to say that drumming is great for our mind and body. Drumming helps us feel grounded. It takes us out of our head and brings us into the present moment, which decreases over thinking from past and future. Drumming naturally enhances a connection with our feelings and to others. That’s why drumming is so wonderful, yes?
Harmony and melody more than icing on the cake
No matter if you’ve been drumming for short or long period of time, you know how great it feels to play a groove that sits in the zone, or that wonderful rhythmical connection we have when we’re in sync with the person across from us in the drum circle. Drumming takes us to that place of inner freedom and self-expression.
Many people are drawn to drumming due to its accessibility. Straight away just with a simple beat on the drum we can connect with our heart and instantly connect with others. Of course, like any musical instrument there is simplicity and complexability. And once students get a taste of drumming, they want to learn more rhythms.
Drumming is always a great place to start if you want to delve deeper into music. Many film composers and music producers started out as drummers. Harmony and melody are the language of the heart, it’s like a translator for emotion. No words just a progression of musical notes can bring us to tears, upliftment, joy, empowerment. Yes, you guessed it music is a powerful tool for our wellbeing.
You might be thinking… well I’m not that musical? What if I said that there are musical instruments out there that anyone can play and no matter what notes are played it sounds musical, it’s impossible to make a mistake? Sound good? I include many of these musical instruments in my Positive Music teacher trainings to help build confidence, break down those limiting beliefs (“I’m not musical enough”).
Three healing elements of music, rhythm, harmony and melody are the portal for deep musical expression. Which you can see in my video.
