Get into the groove of drumming
As a drum teacher, music mentor and personal coach for musicians and non-musicians, I love seeing clients and students grow.
No matter whether you’re a weekend recreational drummer or a professional musician, timing matters. One element I teach in my drum classes is developing students time and feel. Playing at different tempos, different time signatures, with spacious rhythms to more complex busy and syncopated rhythms.
The basic role of the drummer is to keep time. Without time, there is no feel and no flow to the rhythm. To every song that gets people up and dancing and foot tapping has feel. It’s that groove that makes us feel so alive and joyous. I’m mainly talking about styles of music that sits on a groove, not classical music such as Mendelssohn where time signatures can change throughout a piece of music, although I love classical music. Actually, as a write this blog post I’m listening to classical music.
How to play rhythms that groove?
We are so blessed these days, there are many music educational material out there to help develop drum skills. I have a student resource online page where students can download pdfs of rhythms and music play-along tracks to help learn how to drum. I’m creating more and more student educational resources each month for those wanting to delve deeper into the 5 healing elements of music.
Developing drumming skills like time and feel can be enhanced by playing along to music, skills are learned such as deep listening and yes anyone can learn this skill. If you’re a beginner it just takes time and patience and a drum teacher or mentor to help guide you along the way. It comes down to training the ear. By learning to listen we begin to build knowledge and enhance creativity.
