The power of music a wellbeing tool right at our fingertips
Drumming is now being used by professional counsellors and psychologist as a safe place for clients to share and process emotions. Music gives our emotions a voice, shifts our mood and allows us to let go of negative thoughts. What a powerful tool to have at our fingertips. When was the last time you had a chance to deeply listen to your favourite songs? What music lifts your spirit and brings you joy?
I’d say at least once a day I am reminded of the power of music and how it can touch my heart and give space to go within and remind me of gentleness and peace. I am so fortunate to be able to write and record music which gives me a wonderful outlet for my emotions. I just finished writing and recording music for the classroom to assist classroom teachers to share the power of music with their school students. The song is called Drum Dreaming. I also created a resource for drum students who aren't experience at reading music notation, so they can learn to play along to the music and understand box form rhythm notation.
A dose of Music to keep the mind at peace
Just imagine music being sold at pharmacies and prescribed by doctors… “here you go, I recommend a dose of Mozart and Thomas Newman during the week and at least once a day for a few minutes drumming to music.” Now that would be medicine I’d happily take…heee. Taking time to just sit and listen to music is great for the soul, its kind of like a sound vibrational hug.
Have you thought of a date night with yourself, I mean many of us are still in lockdown (here in Melbourne at least), so we’re unable to go out – why not set the mood with some lovely candles or incense, set out some blankets and pillows, maybe a pot of herbal tea, or something stronger. Turn down the lights, turn off the mobile phone and TV. Snuggle in, and add your favourite music. What kind of music would you put on? Classical, reggae, funk, soundtracks, meditation music or pop, rock, country – have I left any genres out? Please leave a comment below of what music you love to listen to?
