Drumming the therapeutic tool for personal wellbeing
One of the best things about hand drumming or any kind of drumming when I think of it, is how beneficial it is to our personal wellbeing.
Personal wellbeing is a huge factor in my drum classes. How and what I teach is aimed at building confidence within students, connection to therapeutic rhythms and with others in the group. So naturally when we learn to play the drum, one of the benefits is how it stimulates the neuro pathways (connected to nervous system) in the brain.
Is drumming more than rhythm?
We have started to get back together in person in Melbourne, which I am so grateful. During the lockdown I promised myself that I will share as much knowledge and bring joy through teaching drum classes, running community drumming workshops and creating healing music.
I was reminded in my drum class the other week, the importance of how simple rhythms with movement and sounding out vocally while playing those simples rhythms can bring so much fun, joy and laughter within the group. Drumming is so much more than learning rhythms, it’s the process of this. It’s the therapeutic side of it that I love. I love how, when we come together in a drum circle, we naturally create this bond, a connection like no other.
I love how drumming fun and simple rhythms stimulates coordination, how it can get total beginners into flow, smiling and most of all bring so much joy. This is a great place to start learning, when we are open and going beyond those self judgement thoughts. This is where healing can begin! All these techniques I teach within my drum circle facilitator training.
