I facilitated a drum circle facilitator training in Melbourne last weekend and was overwhelmed with all the positive feedback I received from who attended the day training.
Huge part of the facilitation training was musicality, so when it came to drum circle instruments for the day program I brought along some low, medium and high pitched drums, wonderful variety of hand held percussion, such as bells, shaker and wood sounds, plus tuned percussion instruments.
In the video below was a segment from the day introducing voice to rhythm.
Drum circle games
The program started with some wonderful drum circle games to facilitate engagement, drum song and find your rhythm. It's really important that the group is setup with small successes from the very beginning. Start building rapport with participants straight away.
One of the great things about drum circle facilitation is that the drums and percussion do the talking, so if you're not as strong verbally communicating with participants but strong on rhythm, intuition and musicianship then this goes a long way.
Musicality to evoke emotion and connection
Sculpting a song in the drum circle takes practice and on this training people had a lot of practice jumping in the circle facilitating the group. Sculpting a song requires deep listening and choosing participants that are rhythmically and musically connected withing the group. But of course when there is melody added to the mix, facilitation skills deepen.
Melodic instruments bring deeper emotional response and a wonderful opportunity for participants within the circle to open up, be creative and shared musical journey that is memorable.
Another highlight of the day was giving away a new Remo medicine drum and two of my CDs. Huge smiles, lots of fun and deep learning from everyone who attended.
