Welcome back to our series Learn How to Drum
We’ve already covered some simple hand drum rhythms, the different pitch drums, the bass line of a drum circle and drumming ensemble and how to tune your drums.
In today’s video we’re going to look at 3 ways you can build your rhythm skills to help take your playing to the next level. So let’s dive in.
When building your rhythm skills take a look at how to play percussion and the rhythms that are played by playing these instruments.
#1: Learn percussion
I’ve facilitated many community and corporate rhythm events and often I’ll hear participants say oh I’ve played a triangle in primary school, as they’ll roll their eyes. By the look on their face they may not have had a positive experience with percussion.
Playing percussion helps develop our musical awareness. In many culturally specific music the percussion is the glue that holds all other rhythm. They form the foundation of that music, and vital to the musical direction, arrangement and solos. Percussion plays a very important part when it comes to rhythm.
#2: Listening to music and Developing your musical ear
This can easily be over looked when building rhythm skills. So what do I mean by developing your ear?
How to develop your ear?
- The first step is choose music that inspires you.
- Find a space where it’s quite
- Allocate time each day to deeply listen to music – train your ear to listen to and Identify the instruments
- Work out the rhythm
- Tuning your ear – particular percussion instruments have recurring rhythms
#3: Play along to music
Play along to your favourite music to help build your rhythm skills. There are plenty of play-along music to check out. I have a few videos that are great to play along to plus Djembe Drumming tracks audio.
