Awaken your potential and create music for wellness
Would you like to feel more relaxed, in flow and mindful? What would it mean to have a great night sleep, feel energised and inspired to live a life of meaning and purpose?
Now more than ever this is the time to take care of mental, emotional and physical health and wellbeing. It is time for personal growth whether that looks like participating in a wellness program or learning the art of drum circle facilitation.
Did you know our brain responds to music in remarkable ways, and the scientists are just beginning to understand how the brain can change and grow through music interventions?
As stated on National Library of Medicine, “The therapeutic value of music can be in part explained by its cultural role in facilitating social learning and emotional well-being.”
I believe that anyone can play a musical instrument for wellness. We are naturally gifted with these abilities, and it’s up to us to unlock these gifts. By exploring rhythm, melody and harmony and being open to the possibilities of transformation, we can change the way we view the world and our self.
Learn rhythm, melody and harmony
Learning simple healing rhythms, simple melodies and harmonies our confidence and self-belief is charged, trust in our self grows allowing music that is within us to emerge and transform.
Now let’s take a look at the video and notice how the song includes a steady rhythm on the buffalo drum. Not too complicated? Our brainwaves respond to this meditative rhythmical tempo, helping us to breathe slower, relax the body and feel grounded.
Now let's take a look at our heart song by exploring melody. I love the native American flute; it nurtures my soul. Here I share with you my personal experience. Throughout my early career as a musical performer, I didn’t think that I could play a melodic instrument. I had the thought I wasn’t musical enough or smart enough. Yet I was performing around the world at auditoriums with world class musicians.
So, yes I am speaking from my own experience in regard to those limiting beliefs. What changed you might ask?
I started working with a musical mentor, and this changed everything for me in regard to my musicality and self-belief. If you feel you could benefit from a mentor, I say go for it!
Ok, so let’s get back to melody. Keeping it as simple as possible and just playing one, two or three notes on the native American flute can create beautiful soothing melodies. Another sweet melodic instrument is the kalimba.
Remember the intention is wellness. When we play from our heart, the authentic space within, we’re expressing our truth. So have fun and explore. Trust your ears and go with the flow. You might be pleasantly surprised.
To complete the Metaphysical elements of music is harmony.
A great place for beginners to start are sound therapy instruments such as singing bowls, Monochord, Reverie harp or chimes. For those who have experience playing a musical instrument, the harp, piano, guitar are lovely to explore, play and have fun.
Why play music for wellness?
There are so many benefits to listening and playing a musical instrument. By directing our attention and focus to wellness and exploring music as entrainment, over time those positive changes whether small or big can impact our emotions, physical wellbeing and self-confidence.
Music engages all parts of our brain, releasing dopamine a chemical that gives a feeling of satisfaction. Which amplifies feelings of happiness.
Music can help us on the road to recovery, a journey to wellbeing and guide us on the spiritual path for those who are seeking.
By embracing music in our day-to-day life music can activate our creativity, imagination, motor skills, decision making, awareness, learning, and the list goes on and on…
Many people from all walks of life, such as counsellors, spiritual leaders, classroom teachers, mums, dads are turning to music and learning to facilitate drum circles as a way to bring harmony and wellness to their community.
The drum is one of the most accessible musical instruments. You don’t need ANY musical experience to start playing. Over the past 12 years of facilitating drum circles for corporate organisations, community building programs, spiritual retreats, I have witnessed huge change in participants within the circle after they have experienced a professionally facilitated drum circle.
