Be the explorer of drumming music
Whether you work with disadvantage youth, a manager in leadership role incorporating wellbeing programs or classroom teacher or community leader and learning new drum music resources for deeper community connection, music has a way to inspire creativity and motivate to develop skills and continue us moving forward.
I feel like a student in this amazing world we live in and feel far removed from any kind of master. By keeping the role of student in mind we can continue to see through the lens of exploration and creativity. With this process of curiosity not only do we explore the ocean of creativity within us, we also understand our self on a deeper level.
Music can help develop the relationship with our self and others. It might come through as resilience, patience, self-belief or just simply a way to express feelings. Ok… so what I’m trying to say is by continuing to develop our rhythms skills and in this case learning different rhythmical time measures, not just in common time such as 4/4, we can deepen our relationship with music and creativity.
Adventure of rhythmical language and self-discovery
When we see music as an adventure of rhythmical vibrations and self-expression, we can become the self-explorer. Learning drums is not a destination, it’s a journey of self-expression and self-discovery. I mean how lucky are we to have a drum and express what is in our heart in any given day? How does it feel to let loose on your drum and express whatever you’re feeling, whether its anger, grief, sorrow, joy, happiness, love etc.
Learning rhythms in a variety of time signatures is another fun way to develop our rhythm skills and rhythmical language. Its just another colour we can add to our palette of creativity.
Last week I released my new classroom percussion ensemble song called Dancing Wildflowers, which is in 12/8 time signature. In this video I share with you just some of the African djembe drum rhythms that I included in the song, plus more djembe rhythms that I also left out of the percussion song.
Keep strengthening your creativity and increase your rhythmical adventurist within. Music lives in each and every one of us. All we need to do is to explore. Happy drumming.
6/8 clave rhythm to develop drumming skills
In all kinds of music and in this case world drumming music, there is a foundational rhythm that supports all rhythms and melody. I have chosen the short bell 6/8 clave rhythm. Here you will see the bell pattern written with X and counting on top, 1 an 2 an 3 an 4 an 5 an 6 an. If you listen closely you will hear how the djembe rhythms connect rhythmically to the 6/8 bell clave rhythm.
The connection between all the drum rhythms and to the clave rhythm is vital to the flow and smoothness of the song. Listen to the video a few times if needed. Music development and learning drum music is also about enhancing listening skills too.
