Rhythms that enhance your rhythmical vocabulary
This drum circle game, call and response is a fantastic learning tool for any drum circle facilitator, teacher or student. Oh… and did I mention it’s fun quick way of learning rhythms?
We can use this rhythm game for all levels as I share in the video of how this can be done. So if you’re a beginner drum student wanting to learn new rhythms or teacher/facilitator who have been playing drums and facilitating drum circles for a year, even for those professional musicians this will keep anyone on their toes.
Unlimited fun rhythms to learn
Like most drum circle games, it is delivered in the moment, with the focus of making it as accessible as possible for everyone within the circle. By making it fun and dynamically creative we can inspire to help grow rhythmical skills. Give it a go now, play along with me on the video.
By learning in the moment and progressing to the next rhythm and using a variety of tonal sounds there is unlimited fun rhythms to learn. We keep our mind focus, in the now and here we can establish good habits of exploration, keeping it fresh and as a rhythmical adventure. That’s the kind of learning I love… no pressure in necessarily in getting it “right” but keeping it fun.
As a professional percussionist who would practice drumkit and percussion five to six hours a day (me) playing over and over the same rhythm, wanting to get EVERY rhythm perfect, this was a new concept for me. Those days of practice are long gone…
Now there is a wonderful opportunity to help others learn how to facilitate their own drum circles to empower and inspire others.
Learn drum games that cater to all levels
I love the saying of Arthur Hull, teaching without teaching. I love this drum circle idea. Drum students and drum circle participants don’t feel that there’s a hierarchy between the facilitator/drum teacher and participant. I love this approach.
If you haven’t seen my last blog post Journey of Self-Discovery with Drum Circle Facilitation, where I share insights on how everyone of us learn in different ways, I suggest please check this out. This will help you understand that learning drum circle games such as call and response can be catered for everyone’s learning style.
Actually, this rhythm game can be applied to all musical instruments…
I’m always looking for ways to help boost drum students and future drum circle facilitators rhythmical confidence and this game is just that. Call and response rhythm game can be used in a variety of ways. Either in the drum circle, drum classes, drum solo ideas in set composed percussion ensemble music, even one on one music therapy session. There are no limits.
