I knew once we were all allowed to start getting back together again here in Melbourne that covid would spread. I was preparing myself and had set out to boost my immune system over the past 18 months. It was during one of my live events here in Melbourne just 9 days ago I caught it from someone.
Thanks to my doctor who had suggested some supplements, plus spending time playing my sound therapy instruments, singing bowls, drumming, flute, and marimba playing and lots of meditation this past 18 months, I know longer have covid and am making a recovery.
I am so fortunate to have music as a huge part of my life that I can use it as part of my recovery process. The beautiful harmonic singing bowls that I play in my sound baths have been a huge comfort. The vibrations settle my body and really calm my nervous system. I had placed a heart chakra singing bowl by the side of my bed and each time I woke or felt any dis-ease I gonged the bowl which would send out a lovely vibration.
When I could, I played my marimba which gave me so much joy. Just playing a simple rhythmic melodic pattern was soothing to my digestive system. It felt like the vibrations from each marimba note was shifting energy throughout my body.
Though I spent the first three days in silence which I really enjoyed and needed. It was a clearing of the slate as they say. A time out from doing and giving my body time to be slow, rest and recover.
Sound healing elements of music for joy, recovery and meditation
Many ancient sound healing traditions have four metaphysical elements of music, which can all be connected to the channel of energy within the body.
- Spiritual
- Mental/spiritual
- Emotional/physical
- Physical
All of these imply energy… yes? Sound healing is vibration and energy and when we work with sound as a tool for wellbeing we begin to work with energy – both go hand in hand with each other. The energy points within the body, quite often they can become unbalanced. The chakras are the primary mediators of all energy already within the body and all energy going into the body. They help the electro-magnetic impulses of our energy.
Certain tones and instruments can be used for balancing the chakra flow of energy. The four healing elements are:
- Rhythm
- Melody
- Harmony
- Silence
These four healing elements connect with the channel of energy. Let us put them together.
- Rhythm - Physical, Emotional/Physical
- Melody – Mental/Emotional
- Harmony – Spiritual
- Silence – Spiritual
Can you see how positive vibrational energy can be used as a tool to keep us in balance? Sound healing can be used as a preventative tool, just like meditation when we incorporate it into our life it strengthens our self-worth.
Being a percussionist and certified sound practitioner, I play a lot of drums and Himalayan singing bowls and this year I started to delve into more melody. By playing the native American style flute and exploring how I can tap into more melody for self-care, I can also bring this lovely melodic sound therapy instrument to my sound therapy sessions.
If we can use these four healing elements for self-care and use them in a way as a meditation tool, we can maintain a balance of our channel of energy. So, when life gets out of whack such as illness or change, we can bounce back quicker, we have grown a deeper sense of resilience within – physically, emotionally and mentally.
Music for self-care
I have just finished recording a student sound healing flute play-along in G for the Miyako Bushi Zen scale. It includes a beautiful variety of my Himalayan singing bowls (harmony) a meditative hand drum rhythm for those wanting to use drumming as a meditative tool to slow down the mind and be more present. (here is the basic rhythm below). In the song there is a call and response section with vocals. The song also features nature with one of our local birds singing.
Take a listen to the play-along sound healing song.
Remember to always consult your doctor for any medical advice.
Wouldn’t it be great to see sound therapy instruments in doctors’ offices, hospitals and schools as a preventive tool for dis-ease?
