Connect to your inner calling with rhythmic music
One of the most exciting self-development adventures we can take part in is learning the art of drum circle facilitation. Not only is it about people, music and fun, it also helps develop a deeper awareness of ourself. I’ll put my hand up for that journey.
At the core of Positive Music facilitation are people. We are in service to those who participate within the circle. It takes awareness of self and of others to facilitate individuals to become a united group creating improvised music – in the moment music making.
By learning the basic powerful tools and skills to facilitate a group, we are on our way of self-discovery and personal transformation.
As a drum circle facilitator our tool is music. How much fun is that! So now let’s take an idea… just imagine synergising music as a metaphor for life and how we can use this concept to be an effective facilitator. What ways can you think of?
Here are just five themes to think about:
-
Chaos – flow
-
Expressing emotions
-
Change
-
Relationships
-
Responsibility
As you can imagine there are no limits to how we can implement drum circle music for all kinds of occasions and for all kinds of populations. As a facilitator it’s knowing how, when and why we use these integrative skills and tools. This knowledge comes with experiential learnings – or on the job.
Part of our role is to take a group of individuals and with these powerful facilitator skills, tools, and techniques we guide and creatively make things easier for people to connect, collaborate, and transform - to become a united percussion orchestra.
Of course, it depends on what population we are working with to determine our outcomes. For example, a music therapist working with dementia patients, their outcome might be to help their client to recognise a loved one in that moment.
Or a classroom teacher looking to reduce bullying. By implementing nonverbal interactions such as the drum circle this can help emphasize empathy and cohesiveness.
We can use these exciting drum circle facilitator skills, tools and techniques to adapt to the populations we work with. Can you see the big picture, how you might bring it into your group and life?
The filter we view the world
It wasn’t until I started learning how to be a certified coach that I fell in love with learning this knowledge. And of course, my personal life experiences, and how I wanted to improve my relationship with myself and others and live a more fulfilling life.
We all have our personal filter, how we see the world and ourself. When we embark on the adventurous journey of drum circle facilitation, we are presented with many learning opportunities for personal growth and transformation.
That is what draw me to this creative and innovative service.
Just by looking at the iceberg picture on the right, notice how our thoughts, beliefs, values come from the subconscious. This part of our mind dictates how we view the world and how this controls our actions.
When we look at how self-awareness plays a huge part in adapting positive and inclusive facilitation styles, we begin to understand how we can serve and the value we bring to our community.
The power of group connection and collaboration
One word comes to mind… FUN! Learning drum circle facilitation is just so much fun. You’ll find amazing open-hearted people, where we can share unique experiences and have fun within the group. We can come together and feel joy and unity while we learn in a creative, fun environment, and feel inspired to take risks.
Drumming together has this uncanny way of deeply connecting us to ourself and others by taking us on a journey of self-discovery and transformation. This has happened to me so many times and the older I get the deeper experiences I have.
Positive Music facilitation is more than drumming in a circle it’s a journey of self-discovery.
