Plato remarked that “Music is the medicine of the soul.”
Just imagine for a moment if you implemented music for wellness… what would that look like for you? What ways can you bring more wellness into your life?
I’m happy to say that you don’t need to be a professional musician to gain the benefits of music. There are so many musical instruments that are accessible for people to discover music and professionally facilitated wellness programs, courses and trainings to help guide people to explore their creativity through sound and rhythm.
The connection between music and wellness has been around for centuries in many cultures. This grew out of storytelling, to inspire connection, hope, spirituality, help bring people together for a greater sense of community. Everyone in the village or community would take part in making-music together.
So why is the notion that only people who have studied music for years at a college can play music? Yes, there is a difference between musical performance, as in complex musical pieces. But when we are talking about music for wellness, such as professionally facilitated community drum circles, where the facilitator has the skills, tools and experience to connect people in the circle and share their unique virtues… it’s not about, performance… yes?
Musical becomes the tool for exploring the relationship with ourself and others.
I know this is deep… yes? That’s what I love about music and people from all different backgrounds. Everyone has their unique talents, gifts and story. When we have the desire to delve into music for wellness either to connect with others or ourself to enhance a spiritual practice or meditation, we become the explorer on our own journey to better the relationship with ourself.
There are so many benefits to playing a musical instrument such as the native American flute or drumming in a drum circle. Its physically, emotionally, and spiritually rewarding. It helps reduce blood pressure, increases the immune system, its unique in a way that it stimulates the whole brain to improve fine motor skills and the list goes on.
So, how can we tap into and unlock our full potential in the area of connecting to our unique qualities, to help gain the benefits of music?
It might be a teacher, mentor, facilitator, coach, spiritual leader for you? I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to have people guide me with the following virtues on my journey of self-discovery.
Here are 5 virtues to consider in someone to help you on your journey:
-
Leadership
-
Life skills
-
Walk the talk
-
Benevolence
-
Courage
When we invite someone that we trust into our life who has self-awareness, they can bring a different point of view about ourself. Most times they can see the strengths within us that we could not see. Something worth considering?
When I run my Positive Music facilitator trainings, at the heart is developing leadership and facilitation skills, self-awareness and creativity. The more we learn about ourself and become self-aware of our thoughts, beliefs and values the more we can delve deeper into creating music for wellness and bring our light to community.
