Therapeutic sounds of the Flute soothes the mind
How can playing Native American-style flute improve wellness? What possibilities does melody play a part in healing?
You may have read reports on the research or hear many people talk about the benefits of music? Have you ever felt an emotional shift or release playing flute or drum?
Community groups, even more and more organisations are opting for music as part of their wellness programs for community and staff.
For those who have gone through emotional and mental health challenges, physical pain and play any kind of musical instrument may understand the healing power of music.
I’d like to share with you my recent personal experience of how playing music had been my life saver, especially this year.
Improvised flute melodies connect to the heart
At the start of this year, I had been facing some personal challenges. The first was the passing of my dad just before Christmas and dealing with family dynamics, then a car accident (not serious), then I fell ill and spent a few days in hospital. Wow…
It felt like I was hit left right and center. Grief, loss and physical pain had been taking its toll on me. I was emotionally and physically exhausted. I didn’t understand what I was feeling, but I felt a deep sadness I couldn’t shake. I went into my shell. I found it difficult to talk and spend time with others. I now realise this can be a symptom of grief and loss.
Within this time frame I continued to honour my commitments with running Positive Music sound baths, sound healings plus finish a recording healing music project. I noticed the only time I felt remotely better was after these sound healing sessions and playing music.
The real change and shift for me was just a few weeks ago. During one of my sound baths, I began to play my heart chakra Native American-style flute (I love this flute, it has such a beautiful rich tone).
The transformation came playing the flute of improvised melodies (from my heart), the sensation of my breath flowing through the chamber of the flute, the vibration of sound energising my fingers, hands and arms and then straight to me heart.
I surrendered… and let go. I experienced a total release of emotion that uplifted my spirit to another level I have never felt before while playing the flute. It was life a changing moment for me.
A place of freedom with healing sound of the flute
After the sorrow that I had been carrying the past three months, it felt like I had come home, a sense of belonging, a deep sense of strength and light.
That night while I played the flute it transported me to a place of no time, no space, just a sense of freedom.
Yes, playing the flute is a healer! Any kind of melody instrument such as the flute sings to the heart, releases old and new wounds. The flute gives us the opportunity to reconnect with our spirit, the divine within.
That night playing improvised flute melodies, gave me the opportunity to let go and reconnect to my true essence, that naturally flows physically and spiritually. It unblocked an energy within.
Sometimes words just aren’t enough, and for those who are unable to find the words, music can become our voice, our release, letting go and finally moving forward or moving on.
Enrich your life with sound healing flute
I want as many people to explore the Native American-style flute and gain the benefits of this beautiful sound healing instrument.
I really encourage those who have always wanted to play a music instrument but just didn’t/don’t have the confidence or even feel that they aren’t musical enough. I’m here to say that, that thought is rubbish! What if I said to you that these are the thoughts that I had when I wanted to start playing the flute six years ago?
No matter your age, I encourage everyone to bring more music into your life. Trust me, it can be such a rewarding experience.
What if I was to say all that’s needed to start playing the Native American-style flute is some basics?
Even me… I see myself as a novice flute player…
I’m really happy to say that anyone can learn to play the Native American-style flute for self-healing. Yes, even beginning beginners. You don’t need to be a musician or even understand music theory to play the Native American-flute. You see the way these flutes (NAF) are made, everyone can make a lovely sound.
I am on a quest for more people to explore music for wellness – even those who don’t think they are musical. There is just too much at stake with our health and wellbeing for us not to participate in music.
Therapeutic flute music is now available
Just this week I’ve put together a few flute resources to encourage those who would like to play the Native American-style flute for healing. It comes with the play-along track and chakra colour fingering cards – no need-to-know music theory. Making the flute accessible to play for all.
