Did you know that there are many elements to music that support healing?
What if I was to share with you that there’s no need to read musical notation or to be a professional musician to use music for wellness or facilitate groups using the healing elements of music?
We are yet to truly discover the powerful therapeutic possibilities that offer deep transformational experiences through music. It’s getting closer though.
Through my studies over the years and deep experiences using and facilitating this model of Metaphysical Elements of Music in my own group rhythmic music activities I’m so excited to share this teaching in my Positive Music Facilitator Trainings.
Let’s look at how we can implement these elements in our personal life, plus a powerful group facilitation tool in rhythmic music circles.
Music meditation for self-transformation
When we connect with these elements that make up music and sound with rhythm, melody and harmony we begin to tap into a deeper sense of energy flow that transcends the physical world. (See the diagram on the right).
Real transformation comes when we embrace music deep in our hearts and let go of self judgement – (those thoughts of I’m not musical, or I don’t have rhythm, what if I look/sound stupid). Deep meditation music can help bypass this section of the brain and open to our true essence of beauty.
By being curious with the desire to explore who we are and through music we can make huge changes in our life. Not just physically, also mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Through music we can step into a world of deep meditation where real change can occur, from shifting old unwanted self-belief patterns of unworthiness to one of self-empowerment and self-acceptance. Powerful, yes?
However, like any successful meditation practice, regularity is the key. By implementing music as a tool for wellbeing on a daily or semi daily practice we can see, experience the benefits. It can take time, especially those deep ingrained self-beliefs. Be patient because you are worth it. Self-awareness is key.
Playing music by myself or with others?
Let’s look at the value of playing on our own and playing with others in a group. Both are fantastic. On our own, we can gain the benefits of exploration, in our own time. Learning and playing new musical instruments and ideas with play-along music can help build self-confidence. Especially the play-along music that’s created for the purpose of healing. Maybe you might be a closet composer, or a healer waiting to be set free?
Maybe you play drums and looking to explore a melodic or harmonic instrument? For beginners I recommend the native American style flute or Sansula for melody, because it’s so accessible, versatile and adaptable for group music-making and sound healing. Same thing with singing bowls for harmony. Simple techniques can be learned with these beautiful therapeutic instruments to help gain confidence to be creative.
There are so many benefits playing music with others too, especially on the social side. Let’s face it, the pandemic has hit many people really hard, being a trigger for trauma. It had and continues to cause people to retreat even further into their cave (so to speak) creating thoughts and beliefs ‘them and me/us and I’m not safe,’ causing a divide in community.
When we come together in a drum circle with the intention to make-music, automatically there is an openness and willingness to connect with others. Although for some who are stepping out of their comfort zone in community music-making can cause self-doubt.
Having a skillful rhythmic music facilitator who understands these dynamics can make a huge difference in guiding the group to connect, nurture individuals’ rhythmical spirit and encourage positive group experiences for belonging that inspire group healing music.
Chakras in music making
Did you know that many music composers across the globe have been using metaphysical elements of music that connect to all chakras?
Rhythm, melody and harmony are important elements. As you can see in the diagram there are 7 energy points within the body (7 chakras). Each one affects different parts of the body, which also connects to thoughts, emotions and beliefs.
Remember that we are energy and sound, vibration is energy, therefore we are all connected through this vibration across the globe? By bringing this mindset into our playing and group facilitation, we open up to the possibilities of greater and deeper experiences of healing. We can view making music not so much as a performance, but a tool for self-expression, belonging, an opportunity to share our unique creative gifts with others.
Can you see how the Metaphysical Elements of Music can touch the heart of all? That we have a part to play in our community to uplift and share the gifts and talents that lay within.
It really is a magical time to explore music for healing! Do you want more music in your life? Have you thought about being a leader in your community and share healing vibrations of music?
Just imagine for a moment… spreading good vibrations and positive energy throughout your community with music… what would this look like to you?
Take aways:
-
Music is energy, we are energy
-
Rhythm, melody and harmony essential parts for healing
-
Learning melodic and harmonic instruments are accessible to all beginners
-
Where your focus goes energy flows.
