Prevent sore and painful hands
There’s something very special about playing this beautiful hand drum the djembe and playing from the heart.
At the age of 21 I was fortunate enough to be teaching drums at my own drumming school. It was so much fun sharing the passion for drums with others.
As I explored more cultural music, I wanted to learn more about playing the djembe drum. It was this time I traveled to Africa and began my study with master Griots. Now that was an experience of wonder and deep cultural learnings for me.
On my arrival back to Australia I hit the ground running teaching African drumming classes for all kinds of people, it was a great time.
However, I seriously injured my hand which I was unable to play drums for 4 to 5 years. After the diagnoses from the doctor, she said I’ll never play drums again and I should look for another profession. It was tough going for a while.
Awakening and transformational
It was during this time I got back into my meditation. Every morning at 4am meditation and going to spiritual retreats and meeting and spending time with spiritual leaders gave me direction and a deeper understanding of life.
This too was an amazing time of self-discovery, deep learnings and awakening. It was this time I also studied to be a life coach, which was another transformation time for me and sound healing with a Tibetan monk Lama Tender. All of this changed my direction in life.
Gradually I played a little on the drums not much, maybe once a week or fortnight for 1 to 2 minutes. I knew that I wouldn’t be the same player as I was before, cranking out solos, playing fast. Physically I couldn’t.
Fast forward to now. My approach to playing any kind of instrument is one of gratitude. How lucky am I to be able to play the djembe, native American style flute, marimba and still facilitate drum circles.
It's with this gratitude, deeper understanding of the healing benefits of music and the connection with meditation.
I am in a happier space to share this knowledge through my wellbeing programs for community and corporate organisations. Plus, help guide and shed light on clarity, direction, purpose with my online students.
