4 Virtues for Learning a Musical Instrument

Transform your learning with virtues

Today lets take a look at four virtues that can help us setup a positive experience while learning to play our djembe drum or any musical instrument.

I’ve embarked on my own personal journey of learning to play songs on the beautiful native American style flute. I wanted to share this with you as many of these challenges have also come up for me.

I can quickly put myself in beginners’ shoes when learning a new musical instrument. These are the virtues that come to mind that I feel will serve many new beginner students.

Here I play the song written by Sarah McLachlan Arms of an Angel. I love learning and growing so I am still fine tuning my playing this lovely song.

There are many virtues, so please add your own – what virtue resonates with you? Please leave a comment below.

Courage

Beginner students can sometimes encounter frustration, difficult techniques, and the fear of performing publicly. Courage empowers us to persist through these obstacles, practice consistently, and embrace mistakes as learning opportunities.

It drives us to take risks, try new pieces, and eventually perform with confidence. By embodying this virtue, students whether beginning their music drumming journey or well-seasoned performer can develop resilience and a deeper connection to their instrument, turning initial struggles into achievement, self-esteem and transforming fear into artistic expression.

Commitment

Commitment involves dedication and unwavering perseverance in pursuing goals. In learning a musical instrument, such as the djembe drum or native American flute for beginner this commitment is essential.

It requires regular practice, consistent effort, and a long-term dedication to improvement. Commitment helps students push through tedious exercises, repetitive scales, and challenging rhythms, promoting personal growth and skill development.

By staying committed, students develop discipline, enhance their technique, and achieve incremental progress. This dedication not only improves their playing ability but also instils a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. Embracing the virtue of commitment transforms our learning process into a rewarding journey of continuous growth and musical achievement.

Goals

Setting goals for learning the djembe drum and any musical instrument is crucial for several reasons. Goals provide direction and focus, helping students know what they aim to achieve and how to structure their practice sessions effectively.

Working with a music coach can help define these goals more clearly for those students who are struggling to put these virtues into action.

Goals help create a sense of purpose and motivation, encouraging consistent practice and perseverance. Achieving set goals offers a sense of accomplishment, boosting confidence and nurturing a positive learning experience. Setting goals help in tracking our progress, identifying areas needing improvement, and maintaining a structured approach to learning.

This systematic progression enhances skill development and keeps learners engaged, making the journey of learning a musical instrument more rewarding and efficient.

Self love

The virtue of self-love is essential when learning something new, such as a musical instrument as it enhances a positive and nurturing mindset. Embracing self-love means being patient and kind to oneself during the learning process, recognizing that mistakes and setbacks are part of growth.

It encourages self-compassion, reducing the pressure of perfectionism and allowing for a more enjoyable and stress-free learning experience. Self-love helps maintain motivation, as learners celebrate their progress and achievements, no matter how small.

This positive reinforcement builds confidence and resilience, making it easier to overcome challenges. Ultimately, self-love creates a supportive internal environment where curiosity and learning can flourish.

Fun

Making fun one of the virtues and part of our learning process we are more likely to practice regularly and persist through challenges. Scientific research shows that when we make learning fun our brain can process information quickly as opposed to making it too serious therefor under pressure.

Fun also stimulates creativity and exploration, encouraging students to experiment with different styles and techniques. This joyful approach reduces stress and builds a lasting passion for music.

Ultimately, finding enjoyment in the learning process transforms it into a rewarding journey, making progress feel natural and fostering a lifelong love for music.
