Elevate your drumming to unlock your rhythmic creativity
Remember when you first started out learning to play the djembe drum and how exciting it was? Exploring a musical instrument that’s fun and rewarding, meeting new people and feeling a sense of belonging within a supportive drum circle community?
What happens when we’ve been playing our djembe drum for years and reach for the same rhythms we’ve been playing for years? Maybe we might be feeling a little stuck, even to the point a little bored playing the same rhythms?
A little creative spark and rhythmic enthusiasm might be the way to go?
Curiosity and exploration are just some of the topics I share with my students. By keeping these in the forefront of our mind, we’re tuned into the longevity of learning about who we are and learning about the creative process of making music as a continuous transformational experience.
Having this enthusiasm mindset for learning helps develop a positive approach for stepping out of our comfort zone. Such as listening to a completely different style of music, or different ways playing rhythms on our djembe drum or exploring new musical concepts for self-expression.
Don’t underestimate the power of improvisation!
Now, for some students, improvisation can be like a deer in the headlights, especially if we’ve been playing the same rhythms for years.
However, it’s never too late to develop our listening skills, which I feel is at the heart of improvisation. Studying with a knowledgeable and experienced teacher can help guide students to reach their full potential playing from the heart not the head and drum with total freedom.
Just take a moment… just visualise what that would look like for you…
In the video I play the beautiful West African drum called the bougarabou from Gambia. Does the sound of this drum remind you of another drum? Listen closely.
As mentioned in the video we can simply replace the bougarabou drum with the djembe and still bring out new creative sounds.
Why not explore something new today. Sit with your djembe drum or another hand drum and allow your hands dance on the drumhead.
Something to really inspire your creativity and feel supported on your creative rhythmical journey is to play with backing tracks.
What’s holding you back from reaching your potential?
