Are you looking to add more creativity and musicality to your djembe drumming?
This week I’ve brought out the inner drummer from within!
My online students love learning new rhythms how to implement new musical ideas into their playing.
I thought I’d share with you an exciting rhythmical phrase we can play on the djembe drum to enhance our music making.
How did this rhythmical phrase 5 over 4 emerge?
I began the adventure exploring this beautiful phrase 5 over 4 way back in the 90s, when I started studying with master percussionist David Jones. Eventually I became part of David’s 4-piece percussion ensemble DRUM! Which comprised of original compositions featuring David and Tom O’Kelly’s music.
I had the most wonderful opportunity playing and learning from both master percussionists, while traveling to places across the globe I have never been before. It truly was a dream come true.
It was during this time I got to sink my teeth into all these amazing polyrhythms and odd times.
There are many possibilities we can create with 5 over 4 phrase.
Drumming with newfound creativity and musical flair
Ready to infuse your drumming with newfound creativity and musical flair? Let's explore musical ideas as we delve into the rhythmic realm of the djembe drum! In this video, I unveil an exhilarating rhythmic phrase designed to elevate your musical expression.
Discover the joy of incorporating fresh rhythms into your playing, igniting a sense of adventure with every beat. With the 5 over 4 phrase as our guide, we unlock a plethora of creative possibilities, enhancing our rhythmic prowess and musicality.
Let’s look at how the rhythm is played over the bar with this box form notation. As you can see the phrase, written as djembe tones is played over 2 bars. Notice where each group of 4 tones begins? On every fifth note, making it a five pulse. So if we take away the 4 pulse it feels like it is in the meter of 5.
We can incorporate this rhythm into our solos and adding fills to our drumming rhythms, creating musicality to our drumming and enhancing our rhythms and listening skill.
Making music can take us on a journey of the soul. Learning new rhythms brings lightness and joy to our playing. It becomes an adventure. By honouring ourselves and committing to developing our musicality, we transform into lifelong learners, continually evolving our own narrative through storytelling.
