The freedom to be musically creative
What would it mean to you to play with total freedom? How could having a daily practise of being curious about rhythm and sound change your approach to how you play the drum, the native American flute or sound healing?
Quite often we judge ourself, compare ourself with others. The self-talk could be, “they sound so much better than me,” or “how could I ever sound that good.” This is a no-win situation for all of us… right?
Lately I’ve been exploring playing the native American flute. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I have had doubts about my ability in this area, “I’m not good enough” as I continue to learn a new musical instrument. So… yes I can speak from experience in this area of self-doubt.
Being aware of negative thoughts that can arise when we step out of our comfort zone, is a huge awareness of the inner-critic. And sometimes when we have a filter that is distorted, we are unable to see our own creative beauty.
Journey of creative discovery
So I’m here to help you on your musical journey of creative discovery. First of why have you chosen to play a musical instrument, whether it’s a djembe drum, Himalayan singing bowl, the flute or voice? Find out your why. How does it make YOU feel?
I’ve been listening to Brene Brown on creativity… she says,
“I'm not very creative” doesn't work. There's no such thing as creative people and non-creative people. There are only people who use their creativity and people who don't. Unused creativity doesn't just disappear.
So here it is. Explore, be curious! When we come from this point of view, we’re not attached to the outcome, we are simply curious. What if I did this… what if I added that sound… while we are exploring and being curious, we’re not judging or comparing ourself.
Do you remember when you were a child and at play? Take a moment now to remember a time when you were at play having lots of fun and experiencing joy. I’m sure you weren’t thinking, I’m not playing hard enough.
Creativity serves as a powerful therapeutic tool
Creativity serves as a powerful therapeutic tool, offering a unique way to express and process emotions that might otherwise be difficult to articulate. Engaging in creative activities such as music, drum circles, writing, or dance allows us to channel our feelings into tangible forms, providing an outlet for emotions that might be too overwhelming to express verbally.
The act of creating can be incredibly cathartic. It allows us to explore complex emotions like sadness, anger, or joy in a safe and controlled environment. This process not only helps in identifying and understanding these emotions but also in releasing them. For many, creativity becomes a form of self-reflection, where the act of making something new mirrors the internal work of understanding oneself.
It can help reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance overall well-being. By engaging with creative processes, we tap into our innate ability to heal and grow, offering ourselves a pathway to joy.
Ultimately, creativity is more than just a form of expression; it is a means of connecting with our inner self, understanding our emotions, and finding peace in the midst of life’s challenges.
