Graceful Rhythms: Perfecting Half-Time Djembe Grooves with Grace Notes
As a djembe drummer our role in many cases when playing with others is having really good timing and supporting those in the music-making process. Whether rhythmically improvising in a drum circle, performing in a percussion ensemble or simply jamming at home with friends, keeping the rhythm (groove) is important.
Consequently, we repeat a rhythm over and over again. So, as drummers how can we feel inspired, stay focused yet be creative and maintain the integrity of the rhythm we are playing on our djembe drum?
Four areas come to mind… let’s explore.
- Timing
- Creativity
- Musicality
- Groove (feel)
Timing is everything, however there are many elements to having really good timing. By playing and understanding the basic djembe rhythms without thinking, or they say ‘in our sleep’ and in time with either play-along drum tracks or metronome we can eternalise and learn different tempos to convey a variety of rhythmic feelings.
Creativity will set you free to be you
Exploring our creative side, which is really important as a music-maker – (yes I’m talking to everyone who has played a musical instrument whether you’re just starting your djembe drumming journey or have been playing for 30 years).
As a percussion teacher I encourage all students to dig deep into their creativity. Have a curious mind, add flare, be creative with the rhythm while still maintaining timing and feel and stability within groove.
I have shown an example of this in today’s video with a half time djembe groove. The feeling of this rhythm accentuates the one and three. Notice some of the notes (sound) in between the main rhythm I’m playing grace notes? Grace notes are just that, softer notes and these notes add feel, colour, movement.
Many rhythms that we have explored on Positive Music vlog are rhythms that focus on the two and four. So, this rhythm is different, with a different feel and vibe.
Playing grace notes with this particular djembe rhythm, adds so much more dynamics, feel and upliftment. However not all djembe rhythms sit well by adding grace notes. Discernment is necessary. This comes with listing to music and for some, studying with a teacher for guidance.
Develop rhythmic music skills with more musicality
As shown in the video I showcase a two-bar djembe fill with the half time djembe groove. This is a cool and funky exciting djembe fill. When playing in the drum circle and ensemble music making with others it really livens up the music that is being created.
Once again discernment is important when adding fills to the rhythmic music with others.
I start this polyrhythmic djembe fill with my left hand, my non-dominant hand. Coordination plays a big part in this and getting the timing right. I love this polyrhythmic djembe fill, it’s so much fun to play!
But of course, this fill had taken me time and practice to get this sitting well and to be honest it’s still needs work. The metronome became my friend for so many years when I had been practicing a lot and developing my drumming skills.
Ok, so let’s check out the two djembe rhythms that play together in the video. We have the half time rhythm being accompanied by a popular West African djembe rhythm from Yaga. Notice how these two rhythms fit together beautifully, yet there is tension between them?
Musical tension can also be a good thing when it comes to making music. Tension brings an energy or a transition within the music and a desire to resolve the tension. We can create this in our rhythm music making for more orchestration and compositions and facilitating drum circles.
Dig deeper into the groove
Learning a variety of rhythms can develop our groove immensely! Listening to music and playing along to music will help develop this. All the areas I have shared with you in this post all leads to having a great feel (groove).
Having a good feel inspires our playing and those we make music with. The groove brings our attention into the moment, why, because it FEELS so good.
