Easy to learn djembe rhythms for beginners in 6/8 time signature to empower creativity
You don’t need to be a musician to play music that’s in 6/8 time signature, actually if you’ve been playing drums for a period of time, most likely you’ve played 6/8 rhythms.
With some guidance, knowledge and a desire to connect with your natural rhythmical self, you’ll be grooving out in no time (pardon the pun).
As mentioned in my previous blog post Soothing Bahia Buffalo Drum Rhythm. We are all rhythmical beings; our first drum teacher was our Mother.
Many years ago when I was teaching kids and adult drumkit lessons I worked mainly from drum books, and teaching reading music, rudiments and technique. This was a huge part of my teaching method. This method was what was taught to me from my teachers. Well… with 20 years under my belt and my own sound healing and music journey, I’ve come to realise that we are all unique and gifted in our own way.
Play from the heart, listen, feel and watch
There’s a balance isn’t there? Build musical knowledge, whether that’s learning rhythms, technique and honing your skills. And then there’s connecting with your heart, playing what you feel to express yourself, not what other people say you should play, but play what’s in your heart. Tune into the three learning elements, what does it sound like, feel like and look like. That’s why the world has been gifted drummers such as Buddy Rich and David Jones. I wonder is this what makes music so good?
In this video there are two djembe rhythms that go beautifully together. It’s like they’re talking to one another, call and response. I’m playing along to Energise Your Life music called Dancing Droplets. One of the biggest learning tools is to play along to music, get out of your head, away from the text books and counting and more into the heart. This is where learning happens. Music makes us FEEL.
Get grooving, continue learning and share authenticity
I encourage students to continue on the path of growing and learning, being open to tap into that unique rhythmical being. Music can teach us so much about our self. My Energise Your Life with Rhythm, Music and Sound is an introductory to exploring music and how we are uniquely connected with rhythm. There are lots of rhythms to learn within the book. They are somewhat a guidance, a way of bridging the connection to your heart. Once you’ve got the rhythm, it feels right and sounds great, it looks fantastic, get creative make it your own, bring YOU into the rhythm and share your authenticity.
These two 6/8 djembe rhythms from this video lesson gives the student enough space to explore the feel of 6/8. Play both at slow tempos. I recorded a song specifically for this purpose to help build musicality, check out 6/8 Meditative Groove to help hone your musical skills.
