Drumming with intention to deepen our rhythmic experience
Did you know that drumming can calm our over thinking thoughts, lower blood pressure and reduce stress to soothe the nervous system?
One way to deepen our drumming are playing rhythms as a meditative tool with a mindfulness approach. Our thoughts are powerful and when we add an intention to our drumming such as adding a virtue, this can become a beautiful prayer or mantra. This style of playing can also be used in drum therapy and sound healing sessions either in groups or one-on-one as well.
Heartbeat rhythm to increase wellbeing
I wanted to share with you the beautiful heartbeat rhythm on the buffalo drum with the virtue of Harmony. I believe it is time that we come together in harmony and spread these vibrations not only with our self, but with thoughts for others as well.
This drumming meditation song, called Harmony Affirmation I composed for one of my online drumming courses can help us tune into intentional rhythmic play. Playing along to music created for therapeutic purposes, particularly scientifically validated tempos known to alleviate stress, can significantly amplify our sense of wellbeing.
Drumming meditation with the thought of spreading good wishes of harmony can increase and strengthen our virtues. So not only are we feeling great by drumming for our wellness, but we are also creating positive vibes for our global family.
Drumming with intention creates a powerful emotional experience for our drumming practice routine, whether we play in a group or drumming at home by ourself. This is the healing benefits of drumming! Anyone can play a simple beat, there’s no need to be a musician.
It’s our intention with the rhythm of prayer that creates the shift in our mood. By setting up a daily drumming prayer with meditation we can even gradually shift old negative thought patterns to one of healing.
Here are a few tips to get you into a good drumming practice routine at home:
- Begin your drumming prayer in silence, tune in to your intention and what you want to achieve.
- For inspiration, choose play-along music to drum along to.
- Make time for yourself to be rhythmically creative.
- Let the music move you, no need to think about what rhythms to play… trust yourself and let go.
- And play from your heart.
At the end of drumming your prayer, take time to reflect and tune in once again. Notice if anything emotionally has shifted. How do you feel? What are you taking away with you from your drumming prayer?
