Is there more rhythm bliss at our fingertips than we realise?
I came back from riding my bike the other day and had taken out my water bottle and just started tapping my fingers. What I found was a fun and interesting sound. When I dug a little deeper, I found that the amount of water also changed the pitch of the sound – not really surprising, but lovely reminder about water and pitch.
Is our untapped creativity waiting to be discovered through found sounds?
What if we stepped outside the box and explored more of what we already have? Imagine what we could create…
I was curious! For me it was discovering this wonderful wacky sound from the water bottle. It’s funny how a particular sound can immediately take me to a place of playing certain styles or rhythms. When I began exploring sounds and improv jamming with the water bottle, I couldn’t help but play in 7-time signature. Maybe it’s the power of sound? It can inspire us to create!
As a Positive Music sound bath facilitator and my continue studies and education with sound healing and sound production, I’ve become more aware of the value of sound. From sounds that are healing, soothing to our nervous system to those that can cause stress and tension physically and emotionally. Sound is one segment I incorporate in Positive Music drum circle facilitator teacher trainings in Australia. Learning how to use rhythm, music and sound is a powerful tool to have and to share with others. By being curious we start to delve deeper into how the power of vibration and frequency can assist us as a complimentary tool for medicine.
Positive sounds have the ability to inspire creativity, release emotion and deep healing
I mean just look at all the sound design engineers out there that continue to create amazing sounds. These sounds can create a visual story, many directors use sound in films to enhance the emotion of a scene. Next time you watch a movie close your eyes and just listen… what do you hear… how does it make you feel?
We’ve worked out that being aware of sound, we enhance our mental, emotional and physical wellbeing. But what if you struggle or don’t have the confidence to tune in and listen? Don’t worry, there are some simple steps to take to improve listening skills. And if you feel you would like a rhythm wellness coach to help you on your own personal music healing journey to expand listening skills and knowledge - go for it!
Now if you know me and you’re a fan of Positive Music blog you might know what I’m about to say? Let’s take a look…
From silence came sound, and in silence we remember to listen...
So slow down … stop… take a few deep breaths… close your eyes and just listen to the sounds that are close by. Remember not to judge the sound, just be aware. Now tune in to those sounds further away from you and repeat this process… now go even further... listen to those sounds further away, what can you hear that is far, far away in the distance? This listening skill can take up to 30 minutes, so make time for practice.
How to creatively explore more found sounds from the home…
During lockdown I created a video of found sounds from the kitchen and I remember the cardboard box I played had a beautiful low pitch to it. Do you have a cardboard box you could drum out a rhythm with? Here are some lovely play along drum resources to help inspire your rhythm and creativity. Spend a few hours exploring found sounds from your kitchen, bathroom and garage, you just never know what sound inspires your rhythmical spirit.
