My top 5 sound therapy instruments to help ease stress and empower mindfulness
How do you manage stress and anxiety? More and more people are looking for holistic ways for healing and self-empowerment. Sound healing therapy is one way to manage a better night sleep, trauma, stress, aches and pains within the body and enhance mindfulness and meditation.
Did you know that 12% of Australians experience PTSD in their life (lifetime prevalence), with women being at almost twice the risk of men? This is According to the 2007 National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing.
The world is going through huge change and these changes trigger stress and anxiety in many. I see it in my everyday sound healing clients. If only every household had the opportunity to at least own one sound therapy instrument, such as I teach in my sound healing workshops, like the medicine drum, Himalayan singing bowl, gongs, melodic instrument such as the Sansula kalimba and gong. Plus the confidence to use the voice for chants, mantras and affirmations.
Sound bowl healing
Sound is a form of energy and when we use sound healing instruments such as Tibetan singing bowls on and around the body or in group sound baths these healing frequencies can shift and dissolve blocked energy within the body. Each hand made singing bowl has their own unique tones and have been known to restore blood pressure, reduce tiredness, and stress and stimulate the immune system.
Every day we are exposed to sound, with some sounds being quite intrusive and irritating. However, with handmade Himalayan singing bowls, when played correctly create binaural beats healing. These binaural beats help slow down thinking, reduce stress and anxiety.
Brain waves are measured by frequency, which is cycles per second, or hertz (Hz), and they range from very slow to very fast. Here’s the full spectrum of the five common types of brain waves that you experience every day, from slowest to fastest:
In rhythm and flow with the medicine drum
For centuries many cultures from around the world have used sound healing music to connect to the heart and enhance intuition. The medicine drum is a wonderful musical healing tool to bring the mind into the present moment, get out of out head and be in flow, where we feel at one with all. The rhythms from the medicine drum strengthen our foundation, we become rock solid and stable. Healing rhythms nurture mindfulness and empower self-confidence. By playing the drum as a healing tool we tap into trust which increases intuition.
Add music medicine healing frequencies for the heart
Did you know to play a melodic instrument such as the Sansula kalimba you don’t need to be a musician? Yes, that’s right… I mean… why should all the musos have all the fun, right?! Now you can add more creativity and heart healing with melody. When we add melody to our personal sound healing, these melodic healing frequencies speak to our heart, sing to our soul, allow our heart chakra to open and exudes the feeling of wholeness, trust, love and compassion for self and others.
Can you see when we bring more harmony (singing bowls, gong etc), rhythm (drumming), melody (kalimba, flute) it become a sound healing therapy journey. Of course, the special ingredient of sound healing is silence.
Have I mentioned you don’t need to be a singer?
One of the benefits of mantras or vocal toning is that you don’t need to be a singer… heap that’s right. Can see… to gain the benefits of music medicine no musical experience is required. My wish is that everyone has the opportunity bring more healing music into their life. I’ve been studying, playing and teaching music medicine facilitation for most of my life and you guessed it I experience the healing benefits of drumming and music nearly every day.
Let's check out mantras for each chakra. Red (base chakra), orange (sacral chakra), yellow (solar plexus), green (heart chakra), blue (throat chakra), purple (third eye), violet (crown chakra).
When it comes to self-empowerment through sound healing, it comes down to how the instruments are played, when and why to use them, and trust intuition which I implement in many of my Positive Music music medicine trainings.
So over to you! What step are you going to take to bring more joy, peace and relaxation to your life? And how are you going to do this?
