How can drumming help strengthen our mental and emotional state?
Welcome back to my Meditation in Rhythm series (segment five)
Do you play a musical instrument such as the shamanic drum to help ease stress? Maybe you listen to medicine drum music to help you feel grounded? Well… I’m happy to say you’re in the right place.
This is the fifth segment to my Meditation in Rhythm video series. The hand drums and shamanic drum rhythms I’m teaching throughout this series are from my drum student development workbook Meditation In Rhythm.
As a musician and certified sound practitioner, I understand the importance of how healing music and drum meditation rhythms can increase positive energy and vitality. On my Positive Music vlog, today I share with you a simple soothing rhythm to help re-charge - regulate mood, lower blood pressure and increase the feel-good hormones such as serotonin and dopamine within the body.
I’ve been busy in my home recording studio in Melbourne, (Australia) creating this shamanic drum healing play-along song of singing bowls, voice (not my voice), harp, chimes and my 12-inch Remo shamanic drum (buffalo drum) for Meditation In Rhythm series.
(FYI: it has taken over 25 hours mixing, producing, creating and mastering the meditation song, and now as a bonus song, high quality mp3 version only with download to Meditation In Rhythm student package).
How healing sounds work on our nervous system
What if we had natural methods to manage stress and anxiety? The shamanic drum and many sound therapy instruments can help alleviate many common health challenges.
As I continue my sound healing studies (it’s an ongoing journey) I learn more about research in this field. I am continually in awe of how sound, rhythm and music, positively affects mind, body and spirit.
Did you know that healing frequencies of singing bowls, voice and many other sound therapy instruments can stimulate and strengthen the vagus nervous system?
The vagus nervous system is made up of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve that runs from the brainstem to our heart and travels down the spine to our organs. It’s like energy within the body serving all organs. Just imagine the vagus nervous system is like roots of a tree carrying particles of positive energy throughout the body…
When the sympathetic nervous system is put under conditions of stress many physical and emotional health challenges arise resulting in chronic fatigue, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, insomnia, high blood pressure and the list goes one.
By using vibrational medicine or sound interventions on the vagus verve we can turn things around, break the cycle from chronic state of stress to one of mind, body balance. Remember our body is energy, the vagus nerve is either flowing with positive energy or blocked and stuck. Research shows sound healing can improve blood pressure, and decrease chronic pain.
Sound and rhythm is energy (frequency). By drumming along to healing music at tempos for example 70, 80 beats per minute our body resonates (energy frequencies) with these soothing and meditative tempos in such a way, the body begins to tune into the relaxing rhythm. To the point where cells in the body change to increased white blood cells, which means healthier immune system. Cells find their balance of harmonious frequency. By including drumming as a meditative tool to ease stress and regulate mood we can begin to feel, and see change within us.
Healing music and rhythms for empowerment, awareness and transformation
Are looking for natural and holistic ways for a happier and fulfilling life? We can use sound medicine and healing sounds as a complementary tool. Just like regular exercise, getting enough sleep, meditation and eating healthy. Using vibrational medicine as part of our routine, as part of our lifestyle we can begin to experience positive change emotionally, mentally and physically.
Sometimes we need inspiration, maybe guidance to keep us on track. As a community leader, certified personal coach, I understand how important it is to feel part of a like-minded community.
So, when are you going to take action? Sometimes the first step can be the hardest to take. Just imagine for a moment, healing music as part of your life with likeminded souls who you could share your creativity, and experience with … what would it look like for you?
